T20 World Cup Day 3 Review: Experience Trumps Youth in a Clinical Triple-Header
Review of the third day of T20 World Cup 2026
Monday at the T20 World Cup 2026 was defined by the "Old Guard" reasserting their dominance. From the historic turf of Eden Gardens to the Narendra Modi Stadium, the associate nations showed heart, but the established powers showed exactly why they are favourites.
1. Scotland vs. Italy (Kolkata) – The Munsey Masterclass
Result: Scotland won by 73 runs. Scotland ruined Italy’s ICC T20 World Cup debut with a clinical performance. George Munsey was the star, smashing a brilliant 84 off 54 balls after being dropped early in his innings. Brandon McMullen (41) and a late blitz from Michael Leask (22* off 5 balls) propelled Scotland to a massive 207/4.
In response, Italy’s chase never truly ignited despite a fighting maiden World Cup fifty from Ben Manenti (52). Michael Leask capped off a Player of the Match performance by taking 4/17, as Italy was bundled out for 134.
2. Zimbabwe vs. Oman (Colombo) – The Pace Battery Strike
Result: Zimbabwe won by 8 wickets. Zimbabwe marked their return to the World Cup stage by dismantling Oman at the SSC Ground. The Chevrons’ pace trio of Blessing Muzarabani (3/16), Richard Ngarava (3/17), and Brad Evans (3/18) extracted extra bounce to bowl Oman out for a meager 103.
The chase was a formality. Brian Bennett continued his golden run of form with an unbeaten 48, guiding Zimbabwe home with 39 balls to spare. A minor concern for Zimbabwe remains the health of veteran Brendan Taylor, who retired hurt with a hamstring issue.
3. South Africa vs. Canada (Ahmedabad) – Markram & Ngidi Seal It
Result: South Africa won by 57 runs South Africa began their Group D campaign with a professional 57-run victory over Canada. Skipper Aiden Markram looked in sublime touch, scoring 59 off 32 balls, while a late 75-run stand between David Miller and Tristan Stubbs pushed the Proteas to 213/4.
Canada’s chase was rocked by Lungi Ngidi, who took 4/31 and removed the top order early. While Navneet Dhaliwal played a lone, gritty hand of 64, the target was always out of reach as Canada finished on 156/8.
Close-in Catcher’s "Final Judgment"
- Hero of the Day: Michael Leask (SCO) – For an incredible all-round display (22 runs in 5 balls & 4 wickets).
- Tactical Trend: The extra bounce in Colombo and Ahmedabad is favouring hit-the-deck pacers over mystery spinners early in the tournament.
- What to Watch: Can Italy and Canada find more support for their lone fighters (Manenti and Dhaliwal) in the next round?
