The Rot at the Top: Why India’s Team Management is in Need of a Total Systemic Revamp
From expired coaching contracts to a rudderless pace battery, the rot in Indian team management is systemic. It is time for the BCCI to act decisively before the rot becomes permanent.
In any high-performance organisation, when the foundation begins to crumble, you do not simply paint over the cracks. You replace the foundation.
Following a series of listless performances and tactical blind spots, it has become painfully clear that the Indian cricket team is currently adrift. This is not just a run of bad luck or a temporary dip in form; it is a clear indicator of structural failure. From expired coaching contracts to a lack of technical guidance for our young fast bowlers, the current management setup is simply failing to do its job.
The Leadership Vacuum
The most glaring issue is the lack of institutional continuity. We have coaches and support staff with expired contracts essentially "phoning it in" as they look for their next exit strategy. In what professional sport does an organisation allow coaching staff who are already looking for their next job to oversee a critical rebuilding phase?
Beyond the contracts, we have a fielding coach who looks completely out of their depth and a team of young, high-potential fast bowlers who are left to fend for themselves without any real technical mentorship. When Jasprit Bumrah isn't there to hold the unit together, the pace battery looks listless, directionless, and completely toothless.
The Tactical Blindness
A team is only as good as its reading of the pitch, and right now, India’s tactical reading is non-existent. We are consistently getting the team combinations wrong, failing to adapt to the conditions on the ground, and watching as our ODI captain struggles to find any rhythm or longevity in tough, hot conditions overseas.
These are not individual player failures; these are management failures. When a captain cannot stay at the crease to build a long, game-defining innings, it is the coach's job to adapt the strategy. Instead, we see the same rigid, ineffective plans applied regardless of the environment.
The Path Forward: Iron-Handed Accountability
This is not the time for committee meetings or “internal reviews.” The BCCI needs to end this rot decisively.
It is time to purge the coaching staff whose contracts have expired and bring in fresh, high-intensity minds who are genuinely invested in the long-term future of these young players. We need to hold the chief coach and the selection committee accountable for their refusal to rectify the obvious gaps in our team structure.
The rot has set in deep, and if we do not cut it out now, we are looking at years of mediocrity.
